3 Days – O’ldonyo Lengai Trekking
Trekking Overview
Embark on an unforgettable journey to O’ldonyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” in Tanzania. Rising above the East African Rift Valley, this active volcano offers a thrilling climb, showcasing unique carbonated lava formations and stunning views. With a trek of three days to the summit, adventurers can experience the region’s rich wildlife and explore nearby attractions like Lake Natron, home to vibrant flamingo colonies.

Begin by driving to Mto Wa Mbu and entering the Great Rift Valley, passing through the Engaruka basin and into a semi-desert area characterized by heat, wilderness, and dust, with extinct volcanoes Kitumbaine and Gelai to the right and the prominent Oldoinyo Lengai in the forefront. Around noon, we reach camp by the Engaresero riverbanks, followed by an afternoon trek to explore the hidden waterfalls nestled within the Western wall of the rift valley. After a brief rest at Kamakia camp, dinner will be served. Later, you'll have some time to rest before your driver guide transfers you in the midnight to commence the ascent of Oldoinyo Lengai (approximately 4 hours climb). Upon reaching the summit you can witness the glowing lava.

Witness the sunrise and the panoramic views extending up the Rift Valley, reaching as far as Kenya. Then, descend and return to camp for a refreshing shower, followed by a late breakfast and ample relaxation. In the evening, you can opt for a short walk as desired before retiring to Kamakia campsite for dinner and overnight stay.

Following breakfast, embark on a guided walk around Lake Natron, renowned as one of East Africa's primary breeding sites for flamingos. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to visit a traditional Maasai "Boma" village, engaging with locals to gain insight into their culture and daily routines. After the cultural excursion, return to the campsite for a hot lunch and make arrangements for the journey back to Arusha or Moshi, where dinner and overnight accommodation at the designated hotel or lodge await.
