Upon your initial glimpse of the Ngorongoro Crater, it presents itself as a scene from a forgotten world. Concealed within the steep volcanic walls lies a pristine wilderness encompassing expansive savannahs, patches of acacia woodland, and shimmering lakes and swamps. Formed by the collapse of a large volcano two to three million years ago, the Crater is renowned for its geological marvels and serves as a natural sanctuary hosting some of the highest densities of large mammals on the entire African continent. The descent into the Crater is an adventure in its own right, and upon reaching the crater floor, you'll find yourself amidst vast herds of wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 bird species. The park's center piece is its shallow, salt lake, which spans a significant area and fluctuates between flooding and drying with the seasons, serving as a habitat for thousands of wading birds, including flamingos and over 500 other bird species. Keep an eye out for baboons and elephants amidst the park's dense evergreen forest, and be on the lookout for the famed tree-climbing lions that have garnered attention throughout Africa. You'll savor a picnic lunch within the park before embarking on a game drive.
